Pawson
Family House
(Notting
Hill, London, UK) 1996-1999
The
Pawson Family house was designed by John Pawson
architects, in 1996. The house is often referred to as minimalist (Brooker, 2013)
and has perfect example of a discreet threshold. The Pawson family needed a
home for themselves, so they have adapted an 8-bedroom house to a 4-bedroom
house. A thin piece of glass separates the interior and exterior space, forming
a transparent wall between the two areas.
By using a minimalist approach, the inside area is not defined as an
interior space and therefore provides continuity between internal and external.
Once the door is open there is no longer a physical boundary. This is John Pawson’s
signature design as he has used it in many of projects. He has also taken away
the visual boundary in the staircase, which links the ground floor to the
second floor, with the first floor accessible.
